Default 12V Power Supply

In the absence of a battery is a battery charger a sufficient power supply to test automotive pieces like PCM's, fuel pump, electric seats, etc? Or is the current output too low? If this isn't a good idea what have you used for a 12 V supply? Thanks. -Bob

I use an old PC power supply, has differnet voltage taps for different types of testing (i.e. 12v, 5v etc...)

A battery charger will run about anything short of the starter motor. Depends on the charger obviously. Mine even worked on the radiator fan at low speed, but the charger kicked off when I shifted to high speed.

I also use a 12V wall adapter from a portable radio for electonics stuff. Most have the current rating right on it. A fuel pump only draws a few amps, while things like guages and ignition boxes are all less then an amp or so.
