Default LS1 in a DSM?

How difficult do you think it would be to put an LS1 in a DSM? It could be done one of two ways, strictly RWD like Buschur and Rau have done in their cars (4G63 with GM converter and rear end). It would also be cool to be AWD but I don't know how much of an advantage you have there. Aftermarket axles are available but the tranny might not be able to hold up to the torque created.

I figure that the hardest part would be motor fitment. You see Buschur mounted his 4G63 non-transverse (like an LS1 sits) and has his converter attatched to that. The problem I'm afraid is that in a stock DSM there would not be enough room to fit the larger LS1 engine and the associated tranny. The only option that might be even remotely possible is a transversely mounted LS1 engine mated to a heavily modified DSM AWD tranny since the AWD trannies are already setup to be transverse but still transfer power to the wheel via a transfer case. I don't know how you could mod an LS1 tranny.

I'm just wondering here. I'm not very knowledgeable so I don't really know what works and what doesn't but it would be a cool idea. It'd be sweet to see a DSM have the deep rumble of a V8.

Plus it would be just plain badass to be able to do this...

Alright, I have to ask. What the hell is a DSM and how is it different from an eclipse?

A DSM is an Eclipse. DSM means Diamond Star Motors, which is the name of a factory created out of a joint venture between Mitsubishi and Daimler-Chrysler to build a number of vehicles.

As far as I'm concerned there are technically 6 vehicles produced there...Mitsubishi Eclipse, Eagle Talon, Plymouth Laser (mine), Mitsubishi Galant VR4, Mitubishi 3000GT, and the Dodge Stealth. Generally speaking though DSM most commonly refers to the first three cars.

The Diamond Star Motors plant no longer exists, hence the death of the DSM in 1999. This is why DSMers disreguard 3rd gen Eclipses as DSM's.

Ryan, I'm sure there is enough room with a little firewall/trans tunnel modification to get the LS1 in there with the T56.

Now running the radiator and accessories would be a real challenge...

If you want, while my block is out we could measure it all and then look at your Laser and see if there would need to be some cutting done or not...

The Mitsubishi Galant VR4 was never made there. It was made in Japan, I own one.

yes you are right. the Galant was not produced in Ill. until 94.

Actually there are still soem DSM cars bein made. look under the hood of a new stratus 2 door there is still a DSM tag on it and it sports a mitsu engine

VERY sorry to bring up a dead thread, but I just got an Eclipse GSX, and want to know if someone has details on converting it to an LS1? Especially with AWD ... but RWD is acceptable.

(NOTE: Please don't be hatin' on me ... I have a 2000 Trans Am Convertible too and love the LS1 power, hence the reason for wanting the swap. The GSX just has no ********* compared to the big boy V8....)

There was one floating around forsale a while back, 91 talon, the motor/tranny was mounted and a lot of the fab work was done, need wiring done and fuel system, search around, It was black, everything was under the hood looked stock on the outside.

Hey 12thStreet,

I'd seen that post before, it's a first gen eclipse (talon, laser), which made me think the 2nd generation shouldn't be unreasonable. There's a bit more space in the 2nd gen than the first.

I signed up with that forum and stuck a post on there for him to contact me, maybe I'll get lucky.

Know what sucks? Your friggin' hood popping open and smashing into your windshield, causing you to have to change your pants and have over $3,000 in damage. That just happened today. Except for the changing my pants part. Holy cow. I just got the car last week.

your wrong. Diamond Star Motors got bought out by Chrysler and 95 after that was the death of them 95 was the last year for dsm and hence why 96 and up has the 4g63 motors and the 420a motors 89-95 had the 4g63/4g63N/A and the 4g64 in it after year 95 cryslter made the 420a engine which is the dodge neon motor I own a early 95 gst and a 90s laser rs awd 96-99 and up are not dsms people get confused about it but it you simply google what year did dsm die you'll find the form don't give false information to other car enthusiast
