Rust is relative. Bring it up north and it would be a clean car.

sweet its xframe, they are not hard to swap. LS1 f body pan, two dimples in the crossmember under back of pan with a ball peen, regular ls1 swap motor mount plates($40 on ebay) and SBC 3 bolt mounts, a trans crossmember for a 4l60/700r swap(lots of places carry them for impalas, $150-175). I think fbody manifolds are what I ended up using. Only other item you will want is a billet carrier bearing for the driveshaft, the stock one or even a stock replacement will bend and shred to pieces even on a stock 5.3.

Have fun it will be awesome

Would a car like this serve me well as a swap candidate? or am I better off with a truck based LS drivetrain?

I'm resurrecting my thread to show the tiny bit of progress I've made and to tell an "interesting story"...So I found what seemed like an awesome deal on a complete ls2 4l60e combo for 3500 with 30K miles. The motor/trans was already a conversion sitting in a 96 impala (I know what a shame to part that car out) and was supposed to be from an 05 GTO. Well after a few hours of labor we had it out of the car and I was able to get the casting # off of the block which reads 12561168 and 241 heads which seems to be an ls1 from what I've read so far...I'm thinking the donor car must've been an 04 GTO I'm gonna do a little more research to find out. I'm still planning to buy it for a now 3k price which I think is still a great package deal even comes with the conversion mount plates!!

out with the old...

What a sweet old car. Don't throw anything away. There will be guys that will buy the original stuff. Even a oil burning motor.

Powerwash the firewall and frame then reassemble.
