newbie about to take the ls1 plunge for his s10,any advice?

Since no one posted, my advice would be to simply have someone around who is familiar with engine swaps, or better yet, your particular swap. Sorry, but its such a vague question it seems like your mechanical knowledge is a little limited (not in any way meant as an insult, merely an observation).

Yeah someone into lsx first of all, don't go to Ted's backyard garage in other words. Each swap has it's own obstacles, but let's just say I'm happy to see people keeping s10s alive . I'd try an lq4/9 setup with some gears/slicks out back.

yeah not hard swap if u know what ur doing,and well worth dumping that 4.3 or 2.2 for a ls motor, way more power, and more mpg

Work backwards is my advice and I'll explain what I mean.

When you start reading all the diff threads on s10 forums and what not regarding the swap you end up with a A LOT of mixed answers and diff opinions, but the only thing that seems constant is people complaining about all the little stuff. It's the nickel and dime parts that will kill you.

I'm getting ready for a swap myself (LS1/T56) and I started making a list of all the small things I'll need IE: fuel fittings, coolers, fans, accessories, center console, mounts, a/c lines, etc. I put these in order from the cheapest on down and I've started ordering.

By the time I get down to needing to pick up a motor and trans I'll already have all the little stuff hammered out, however like a few people pointed out, it helps if you know your way around a LS engine.

Best advice I can give is to take your time and research, research, research. If done correctly and with a good eye for deals you can do the swap for around $4000, but if you pay a shop and listen to all the crazy advice some ppl have you'll easily surpass $8000. Make sure you know exactly what you need to do at each stage before you even get there, are you prepared to notch a frame for the a/c system to clear? Or is spending $800 to replace the whole system for one that mounts up top ok with you?

It's very involved so make sure you know what you're getting into before yanking your stock motor out, because that's the easy part.
