4.8 in a Gremlin

Hi guys,

Looking for some basic advice and some starting points for the swap. The 360 I took out of the car had a rear sump set up and oil pan. Is there any factory oil pans for an LS that will give a rear sump set up? I'm not sure what my clearances are going to look like yet, but I would imagine that if it was rear sump on the old AMC v8 that I would need something similar to clear the front cross member.

a hooked up gremlin is a car i havent seen in awhile. ive never seen one with an LS. cool idea.

The car was very fun with the 360 in it. However the aftermarket for AMC v8s isnt that great, and there are a lot of AMC guys who think their crap doesnt stink. None the less I had a lot of fun with the AMC power plant, but Im looking for a little more. The car originally dynoed 84hp with the factory 258 straight 6. When I built the 360, it dynoed 230hp. That was a huge change for that car.

Im hoping for double that with a turbo 4.8.

Great to be here, looking forward to learning the ways of the bow tie.

I have seen a rubbed gremlin with a Buick 455 in it and it was insane.

Good luck.

I want to see this. I was goin to do it with the LS1 I got, just couldn't find one so I got the S10 for cheap and did that.:)

Most of the LS pans are rear sump. If a 360 fits, an LS should fit just fine.

I wanted to do Pacer or a Gremlin but they are hard to come by around here.

Had a 72 back in the olden days, lets see some pictures.

I'll get some pictures up later today. Its not a show car by any means. Just a beater.

Here is just a couple pictures. Didnt want to bore anyone with AMC 360 pictures. Is there any year 4.8's that are better than others?

I love the color. Keep it.

I think after sometime around '06 the 4.8/5.3 got slightly better heads, and the newer ones may have a bit more compression. Are you set on a 4.8? the 5.3s are generally just as cheap and make more power to begin with.

I'm under the impression that the 4.8 is basically a destroked 5.7 5.3 ect. I like the beefier skirts and shorter stroke of the 4.8. What about rod bolts? I dont plan on doing much with the engine, but if I have the pan off to swap it with one that fits, would it be worth throwing some better bolts in there?

Its a destroked 5.3. Same block, same heads. Different rotating assembly.

Do rod bolts. I'd assume a 4.8 will spin higher than a larger engine, and they all seem to have issues with rod bolts. You may want to consider a cam and springs, but it may not be needed with some boost.

I was going to do cam and springs regardless. I was just tossing the idea of rod bolts around...How do people go about replacing the bolts. Undo 1 at a time a tq to spec?

i just finished helping a guy i work with to stuff a 383 sbc and a th400 in a pacer! took it to ocmd for its maiden voyage. custom cowl hood, cal-tracs, and 295/65/15 dr's make for ALOT of fun and a helluva lotta looks from people lol

I did my rod bolts one rod at a time. I split a few caps to check the bearings while in there. Just make sure the caps go back the same way the came off. The LS uses cracked rods.

I'll try to post a pic of my 66 American with an LS1. The AMC engine compartment and crossmember changed very little over the years. Engine fit pretty well with just a little crossmember notching to clear the f-body pan. Car now has homemade k-member with mustang II rack and late mustang coilover struts. Feel free to post or email any questions. bobg401@yahoo.com
