Default LS1 + 4L60E into 3rd gen????

i was lookin at the thirdgen resource site and they list a set of swap motor mounts with a new tranny cross member that they say is "required" to install a 4L60E with an LS1 into a 3rd gen.
is it really necesary to change the tranny crossmember? the car i am pallning this swap for already has a 700R4 in it, all of the mounting, out put, and overall lengths are the same, so why the need for a new cross member?

thanks
tim

I don't think anyone selling swap materials, has actually taken the time to manufacture true "KITS." The motor mount brackets sold by the various resources all place the motor in a slightly different location, and therefor your tranny is going to be in a slightly different location.... and thus you will need your crossmember to be in a different position than it was with a SBC (or a new one altogether.)

It's likely that you will be able to reuse your crossmember, but I can almost guarantee you will have to modify it to make it line up with everything else when all is said and done. UNLESS... you want to make your OWN motor mounts and make them line up with the crossmember you currently have.

It's really hard to tell, as I don't know how yours is currently setup, and I don't know what you are planning on using for swapping the LS1 into your car.

If you use the thirdgen resource mounts, you will have to modify your crossmember or buy his crossmember. You're lucky because the modification to make your crossmember work with the automatic is fairly straight forward and easy. Take a look at Speartech's site, it shows exactly what you need to do to modify your crossmember.

thanks for the help gang.
speartech's site is a great help.
i have access to everythign to fab up a nice chromoly cross member, i think i will have to take advantage of that since the modded stocker is a bit gnarly lookin.

thanks again

I used the Thirdgen Resource motor mounts and tranny crossmember and the motor mounts worked out great, dont know about the tranny crossmember yet. I'm waiting on some tranny cooler lines to finish up the install. Its worth the extra $ for less of a headache IMHO.

There are some other odds and ends things that I need to button up before its road worthy, like a whole interior. I'll likely do a write up on the whole install, but give me some time on that. Heres a link to some pics. of my progress. http://www.thirdgen.org/techbb2/show...hreadid=227703

well, i like the looks of the cross members and motor mounts that he aftermarket offers, just not the weight of them. hehe
as the guys who kow me on this borad can tell you i am the weight ****. i woudl like to see a set of those motor mounts up close so i can make a copy of them out fo a more appropriate material, chromloy will be the answer if i can't get soem made out fo aluminum i will also have a little more space to be creative than a lot of guys since i plan to solid mount both motor and trans.
