Where to start..... So I just want to say that I'm new here to LS1Tech. I've got a project Trans AM that needs a motor. I've been toying with the idea of doing an LS swap for about 2 years now but since the original 403 blew up 
I now have an excuse 
I would like to know much as possible of how to do a sucessful swap on a budget. My ideal Power range is low to mid 400hp with matching torque. Turbo's are a huge possibility in the future. Standalone ECU and harness is perfered. and definatley a 6 speed manual! Im looking at buying a core or possibly running motor out of a wrecking yard I deal with.
So what motor (or base motor) is right for me?
Is it easier to build a motor piece by piece or buy a complete?
What modifications are needed for future applications?
Any open suggestions?

400hp is pretty easy with a 6.0.

If you can do your own wiring, get the motor complete with ecu and harness and modify it yourself. This site is hekpful.

If you are looking for the 6 speed manual, your best bet will be finding a wrecked 98-02 Fbody. You will have many of the parts you will need and won't have those parts nickle and dime you to death. I bought a 99 Z28 M6 and so far with all the parts that I have sold I am ahead by about 600 bucks! I still need to buy some gauges and fuel system parts, but I think when all is said and done, I will break even. Which isn't bad at all.
