Picking gear ratios question? Anyone know of a site where I can input the hp/tq curve of a motor, the rear end ratio and then calculate the gear ratios 1-6 needed to get maximum power down to the pavement?
I want to re-gear the T56 going into my build...but want 5th & 6th to actually be useable for acceleration, not as "cruise" gears.

Its not that easy. Basically you want the engine power at the shift point to equal the power at the rpm after the shift. The peakier the engine, the closer the ratios need to be. Old T56s had great wide spread 4-5 and 5-6 for cruise economy. Using later model gearing, with about a 0.8 for 5th and 0.63 for 6th puts the drop at 20% for each gear, a fairly close ratio.
Then select the axle so the peak rpm in top gear is the top speed you expect to achieve.
