Default is this a good start?

i now have a 1964 nova. it has rack and pinion in it from flamming river. it has a 355 sbc making around 380 hp. i was wanting a ls engine with around the same or more. would this be a good start?

http://jacksontn.craigslist.org/pts/3650495968.html

would putting ls6 intake, heads, and cam be around the same power?

There are better deals to be had. Complete engines with acc, wire harness, pcm, trans go for about 1k or less from I've seen. Any reason you want to go ls and make the same power that you have now?

Why not look for a LQ9 or something. That would start at 385hp.. stock !.. A LS6 would be 405hp stock. Might cost a bit more. But you might save $$ and time to start with something larger.

These Gen III/IV engine are easy to get 400+ with some easy bolt on or cam/head changes. Add header.. you can push 450+ easy. My Chevelle with a stock 99 LS1 w/LS6 intake and header makes 330 rwhp. .that is about 385 at the flywheel..

As stated.. try and find a completed setup.. wiring harness, PCM, all of the Accessories, etc.. that will save much in the long run also.

just my 2 cents..

i want more power than i have but i really dont want to down grade. i have never drove an ls car but i would assume that the 380 on the ls would be quicker than the 380 on the sbc. it would be better on gas too. i know that sounds retarded but i figured the acceleration would be better.

I would suggest you take your time in finding a good pull out or package. Go and drive a few LS cars (swapped or stock).. and you will see that difference and how will they drive. Spend a little more now and it will pay off later.. not having to upgrade the heads, cam, etc..

the biggest improvement imo in a Gen III/IV/V is in the Heads. See if one of your friends has a set sitting around and take a look at the ports and valve arrangement.. then you can see why they make such great power !.. they flow as is !

i want to go with a 6.0 but i cant find any in my area. i found out i will have to get some different type of headers that cost a fortune. having a first gen nova is going to be hard with shock towers.

i wish one of my friends had a ls engine. i drove a 5.3 truck but that aint the same. my friends have eclipse, civics and integras. i know my lt1 was quick but i sold it to build this nova. i just put new paint, suspension, new 355 sbc, turbo 350, danna 60 rear, and tilt column.
