It can be done, but there is cowl modifications and IIRC you need to delete the wipers? I could be wrong on that. I must ask, why? The LSx motors are very easy to come by.

Gross. I could almost understand a big block...but a small block? I would buy a junk yard 4.8 before I put a 350 in one.

Honestly, the ls1 is the best thing about the 4th gen. Without it, the car isn't all that great and they have a lot of quirks to live with.

He has found a 2002 Z28 minus motor and trans for sale for his son for his first car but is affraid to put an LS1 back in it because of the power issue so he is thinking throwing in a tame small block instead.

I'd think a 4.8 would be much safer that some home-built car with the wrong engine. Much cheaper also.

I agree he is better off doing a 4.8 than hacking the car up just to put an old school 350, especially since the 4.8 should getter better mileage and be more reliable.

An LT1 is rated at 260-300hp according to the Wiki. A 4.8 is rated at 255-285hp. Might as well do a 4.8 and tune out all the spark advance.

Go with a 4.8 or a 5.3.. Much easier swap, better mpg, more reliable... And still capable of making decent power.

4.8 and 5.3s are retarded cheap and plentiful.

He can swap in a 4.8 or 5.3 truck motor cheaper than he will be able to put a small block in it. And then it will still have: EFI, excellent fuel mileage, a little more power than a tame 350, and the car won't be hacked up so it will still have some value left.

It will be a lot less headaches at the end of the day.

My suggestion is for you to tell your friend to beat his head against the wall until this "urge" goes away.

Now, I'm just going to be mean: I have a 70K mile LS1 long block, with f-body exhaust manifolds that will be available in about two weeks. I picked apart a 2000 Z28 donor for stupid cheap, and only need the EFI, Computer, wiring and sensors off of it (to put on the 3K mile 2001 LS1 in my TA). The rest will be sitting in my garage in NW Indiana. Before anyone asks, the rest of the car is already sold, except the steering rack, k-member and front suspension

put an ls1 in it and tune the computer to have a speed limiter at 70mph

And tune the power down in spark advance so its a dog.

Or instead of making the car unsafe for avoidance maneuvers or passing, teach the kid some respect for the car?

I suppose it would work if you'd want to leak a bunch of oil, make alot of noise, and go really slow its possible lol! But seriously, 4.8 all the way, that will set you up with mounts and stuff for a ls3 when the kid CAN handle the power.
