Default Harness question

Ran across a local guy with a couple harnesses for sale. A few questions since he isn't keeping track of them all that well. How can I tell what harness was used on a 4l60-e trans or a 4l80-e trans or a standard trans. Some of the harnesses have damage and like any other wire I guess they can be spliced. But whats the box for in this pic? Are most harnesses the same,? he has a couple that are red/blue for the ecm and two that are green/blue. How hard is it to change a standard harness to a automatic? Or is it even worth it to play around with used?

Box in pic appears to be a fuse/circuit breaker panel.

If you have the tools, skills and time to do your own harness work there's no reason not to.

A 4l60e will only have one VSS Plug.
A 4l80e will have 2
A manual will not have the round Trans plug.

If you have zero wiring stuff on hand then buying a used complete uncut one might be a good way to start a DIY, since you'll have all the connectors you need more or less and a good starting point. I would never, ever buy a harness someone else has messed with to use as a starting point though, who knows what they've done. Just based on my experience I'd say buy a cheap stock one or a completed quality one from a vendor (or go hp efi, but it's a lot more $$$).

Switching the two back and forth between auto and manual is pretty easy too..I've built both for cars that have switched. Just get the pin diagrams and have fun..
