4.8l (lr4) question I recently bought a 91 caprice wagon. What all can i do to a 4.8l to make it a lil more powerful. I am not wanting a beast by any means. I want to purchase a cam, headers, exhaust, stall converter etc. How big of a cam can i put in the 4.8l and run nitrous to. How big of a shot of nitrous can the 4.8l handle. What all do i need to make it handle a 150 shot. Some info on the 4.8l would greatly appreciated. I have a chance to get a 4.8l pretty cheap from a friend. Low mileage.
Pass. It's only 9.5:1 and already has flat-tops. So even with milling the heads it only reaches a modest 10.0:1. And have you priced head bolts and head gaskets for these?
Then you could find a used 220 cam, and with a 2-stage you could spray 200 HP, but better to forget all that and just turbo it or get at least a 5.3L. The 4.8 pistons in a 5.3 with milled heads gives 10.5:1, then add a 224 cam, but still that's nowhere near the results of a Chinese T76 on a stock 4.8L.
Either way plan on new Z06 valvesprings.
And this cheap 4.8 isn't a good deal unless it includes the computer and harness at a minimum.
And what about a transmission? You'll want at least a 4L80E if you want any durability with a power adder.
