Rear engine transaxle?
A Porsche transaxle is gobs lighter (60lbs or so) and can handle safely I would say 700-800rwhp. It would be torque of a turbo/supercharged V8 that breaks one. A G50-52 has a 9" ring gear and is the beefiest of all the Porsche units. With some billet upgrades they become ultra strong and pricey. A buddy of mine is building an RCR SLC with a 20B (3 rotor) turbo and had one built.....it was about $14K with upgrades!
The 70s Olds Toronadoes and Caddy Eldoradoes had longitudinal V8s and front wheel drive - yeah it is an automatic, but prob a LOT cheaper.
