Default Switching from 4l80 to 4l60......

Building a '72 Blazer with a LQ4, and I have the 4l80e that came with it. I'm wanting to do a cam swap on the 6.0, but will need a stall to make it worth while. Problem is stalls for 4l80e's are expensive! However, the 4l60e's and stalls are reasonably priced. So, would it be a dumb idea to switch to the 4l60e since I can get one for less than the 4l80e stall alone? The Blazer will be a street/show car only and won't see a drag strip. Any opinions?

As long as it's a street driven show car, I don't see the problem with it. I would imagine those 72's aren't quite as heavy, especially with the top off.

What size tires are going on it?

The 4L60s are so cheap because everyone is in a hurry to get rid of them.

If its a street/show car only, why bother with a converter anyway? A reasonable 4L80e converter can be had new for $500.

I imagine it would weigh just a little less than a shortbed truck. Not sure on tire size yet, but not tubbing it or anything.

I want the stall so that drivability isn't as much of a concern, and I want the power out of it even (especially?, LOL) if it doesn't hook up real well, since that's impressive to future buyers. Where have you seen a 4l80e stall for $500? Link?

Circle D's converters are the same price for billet single disk either 4L60 or 80. Where are you looking that the 80 converters are that much more?

Def keep the 80e. That would be a big step backwards to go get a 60e. Not to mention you'd have the re-flash the ecm for a 60e and also the wiring would be a bit different. FWIW my single disk billet PTC converter (lockup too) was $650 ~ 700 shipped. Not sure that a 60 converter is that much cheaper to justify having to buy a new trans that is weak from the get go.

For the size cam we discussed you would be fine to use a stock converter. However the $500 80e converters are a good deal for your mild setup.

Rev Max sells 80e converters for 450 for low stall and 500 for 3000+ stall.

I would not go to the 4L60e unless it was rebuilt with some stronger parts (Sun Shell, Disk, band and sprag at a min). OEM Sun Shell are pretty weak/thin and tend to strip out. The 4L65e or 70 is a better choice.

How big are the tires going to be on that blazer? Your probably already toward the heavier end of vehicles with the blazer, if you have oversize tires its going to be that much more stress on the 60e. I seem to notice that the completely stock 60e`s hold up ok, but it seems like I always hear about 60e failures and then the next thing is that they had a stall in front of it. Seems to me that the added stress of a high stall converter usually shortens the 60e`s life, especially in a heavy vehicle, or car that can hook up.

no way in hell I'de get rid of an 80 to go to a 60! I'de take a stock 80 over the BADDEST built 60 any day. You'll have way more room to improve later.

I guess I should have mentioned that it's a 2wd Blazer, but anyway.... I think I will just stick with the 4l80e since I have now seen converters around the $500 range. The ones I was seeing when I first looked were triple disc and they were in the $1100 range (FTI, RevMax, Circle D ect.) So my next question is, what brand has the best reputation? I was thinking Circle D since I haven't found much bad about them. Anyone have any experiences with any other brands?
