My box of header tubing and 4 to 1 collector showed up right on time today! Header building this weekend for sure. Might also be time to get a portable AC unit for the garage. I think its going to be 100 degrees all weekend...

Nice project, I like different stuff.

Where did you purchase the header tubing from and what did it cost you?

Gofastgwclass -

I got the tubing from Atech motorsports. It is the discounted Summit site.
It says it is something like 32 FT of random bends. I will post a picture. It is made to do 2 long tube V8 header.

$142 SCH-MB175

Flyiingbrick88 -

That would be a good solution! But it is already low how it is. It needs to be able to go over a speed bump!

Big box of tubes. Don't even know where to begin....

Collectors and header flanges. Only going to use one of each of course.

First try to makes the pipes oval to fit in the header flange. I think it turned out good besides the bad picture.

Thanks, but looks like a dealer only site. I do random stuff for myself and the occasional build or update for others, I doubt I could qualify.

Officially started the header today.

Step 1 -

Gather all parts

Step 2 -

Mount flange

Step 3 -

Mount collector

I figured I needed a place to start and a place to end. After that, it is like connecting the dots

This weekend wasn't the best for work. First it started off at 100 degrees. Then it went to 95 and 90% humidity. Then 85 and pouring. Anyways, I got my header all tabbed up. Let me just say, whoever makes headers for a living, I feel for you. These headers have been the worst part of the build by far. Not something I want to do again. Here are some pictures.

The start

Tabbed

Wow, no kidding! If you knock those tubes loose from the flange and collector to weld them up, I can't imagine any of them actually fitting back in where they came from after the heat moves everything around...

Yes the welding is going to suck. It would be nice to have a TIG at my house... My plan is to weld as much as I can with the header fully assemble. After that I will pop a tube or two off and finish the rest with hopes that it doesn't warp too much. The good news is that I have a ton of tubing left over so if I need to change something up I can! It took me 8 hours to get to that point and I am guessing another 8 hours with the TIG. Almost makes me want to just MIG it and get it over....

If it was me, I would have 90'd the collector towards the head. So long as it is mandrel, it should not affect he exhaust velocity but just a tiny bit. Not to mention it would have made fabricating the header 1000 times easier than all that flipity looity stuff that is there now. Best of luck with this and be careful with your welding, try not to get burned.

Just a suggestion.. I know its a bit late to suggest this, but I will try it anyways. Also, you would have more room with this suggestion by going to a shorter length collector.

Thank you for the suggestion. I really wish you could see what kind of room I am dealing with. It is not nearly as much as the pictures make it seem. There is about 10 inches from header flange to the rear fire wall. I will take another picture tonight from the top down. As for the crazy looking bends, in a way I did them on purpose. I was trying to make all the pipes the same length. I got close with 3 being within an inch of each other but the last one is about 2 inches longer then the shortest.

At this point I will agree with you. The header has been the worst part of the whole project and it is only half way done. Being my first header build, I find it a good learning experience. You would think I would have good connections of a header fabricator, but the cheapest quote I got was $750. I am in this header $160. My time is free, a shops isn't. I might not be saying the same thing after I start welding it up....

Worst case scenario, couldn't you make up a welding jig for each individual tube to hold it in place at each end before you weld the sucker up? It would take time, but might same time in the long run if your welded tubes actually fit back in where they came from. Lol...

Here are a few pictures of how the exhaust fits. It is a tight fit getting it on but nothing I will complain about. I am overall happy with it and the money I saved and new skills I have learned.

Personally I think you did a great job on building your first header. Looking foward to seeing more progress...

I do too. My suggestion was not a complaint of his building skills, it was a SUGGESTION of routing them in a different manor to reduce the amount of welding and tubing he would have to use.

That is all.

Good job on the fitment, and you are right, the pictures did not clearly define just how tight it is in there. Don't forget some header wrap to keep in the heat and out of the cab area.
