Reluctor Wheel Question
Reluctor Wheel Question I've searched all over this forum and a few others and have not been able to find a straight answer. I am currently running a 2002 LS1 in a jet boat with an MSD-6LS ignition controller. I want to take it up a notch next year with a 427 inch LS3 stroker motor. To do this I'll be starting with an aluminum Gen IV block since it's already the correct bore.
IF I get a stroker kit and have a 24 tooth reluctor wheel put in it, will the MSD-6LS be able to read the cam position sensor in the front cover?
I know if you put a 58 tooth reluctor in a Gen III you also have to put a cam with a front sensor so they will both talk to each other. However, some Gen III's had front cam sensors also.

Yes. I found out the hard way that a 2006 GTO LS2 has a 24 tooth reluctor wheel. You can get a LS1 MSD controller to read the front cam-cover style sensor by reversing the outer two pins on the plug and bridging these two wires with a 1/2 watt 1000 Ohm resistor from Radio Shack. The cam gear also has to be a 1x gear. get a complete 2006 GTO timing set from Advance Auto ($35, VERY well made, compared to the $78 piece of crap from Auto Zone). See attached pic for comparison. The AA part is on the right.
