Default Coolant reservoir or not?

Hello,

Another newbie question: Do I need one or will the LS1 settle with the almost-full-radiator-setup from factory back in the day?

My LS swap manual (How to swap GM LS series engines into almost anything) doesn't really give a clue here.

Stock Corvette 2000 LS1 into a 1969 Skylark with aluminum radiator and electric shrouded fans.

This is not mine, I just stole a pic online.

I never used that style in and LS swap. Just run the overflow hose to a catch can and be done.

I agree, at the most all you need is an overflow bottle, but even that isnt necessary. Just dont try and use Dexcool with an open system like that because when Dexcool mixes with air from cooling down will turn to a mud like crap.

Good to know, thanks guys!

Just poor in regular cheap non-longlife ethylene glycol? Or what do you use? Your brands are hard to come by here in Europe, so what sort of antifreeze would you recommend?

Anything green should work fine.

Default Overflow

Speaking from experience my ****** ran an LT1 but sometimes heated a bit. Turns out the coolant expanded and the small overflow tank couldn't handle it resulting in a loss of coolant. I installed a larger overflow and the system stayed solid from then on. In other words, when a system heats up and the coolant expands it has to go somewhere, either total loss or to an expansion tank. When it cools the system is either replaced with coolant from the expansion tank or air.
