Default Truck ac compressor in older truck

I'm doing a swap into a 79 f150 all is done except ac hoses. Called n talked to a company and he said the fixed compressor will not work with the expansion valve acover system the truck has. Has anyone had first hand experience with this?

I thought the "fixed" displacement comprossor (most truck /van) was what would work with most old/aftermarket ac systems??

He's trying to sell you a compressor...the compressors in all old pick-ups are fixed displacement. That's not to say that the new Sanden compressor he's trying to sell you won't work better.

I typed it wrong, he said they are variable. I told him I looked it up on rock auto and it showed fixed compressor part number.

He's wrong for the most part. All the Denso truck compressors that have come on GM trucks have been fixed displacement, although that maybe has changed over the last few year models.

I'm using the Denso 10S20F (I think that's the right part # - prompted edit by 67skylark below.) with vintage Air. Mine was stock on L92 and in a Denali, which had front and rear air.

My system works great.
I know it is a fixed displacement compressor (F in the model # stands for fixed). I've heard even the variable ones will work, but they would be run as fixed. I can't say I have first - hand knowledge of that, however.

Hope that helps.

Doug

Denso 10S20F and 10S17F are also fixed displacement pumps that came on the 2000-2010 trucks/vans

Get the mastercool crimper in amazon for $150 and build your own hoses. Easy to do.

Did you get your AC up and running? If so how is it working? I am knee deep in restoring a 1936 Chevy coupe with a transplant L59 engine. I was told the exact same thing by VA that "variable compressors" won't work and this is after I told them I had a factory Denso 10S20F on my 5.3l from a 2004 Tahoe. Today, from this thread(searched all day for this problem), I find out it's a fixed displacement..wow. I almost popped on a new Sanden and bracket kit. I will put in a new Denso 10S20F just to have a new compressor for this build as it is tight and down low and don't wish to change it out anytime soon after I'm done with this build. My ECU has been reworked and all AC removed. I am using all VA components as a stand alone system, except their comp. and condenser. Glad I found this thread, Thanks! ya just gotta love Ls1tech. On the lighter side I am in Keller, just outside Ftw

Hello yea small world. Gotta love forums. A/c working great condenser gets pretty dam hot fans not moving enough air so I'm gonna have to add a pusher or upgrade the pullers. Funny thing ac stays cold even as engine temp rises

Hey you bet! glad it worked, well - it is a very nicely made tool. Yeah, I think it will work for swaging ends on other types of fluid lines, too.

FYI...ACkits. com has a very good forum on the website and probably sells the crimper kit too, but I'm not sure about the price. I've gotten some good answers there!
