Default Remote trans cooler location input

Am by-passing the radiator transmission cooler (long story), and I got this great remote unit with a thermostatically controlled fan.

It's going into a 55 olds 88 with an LS2 and 4L60E. And even though this is a giant car, I'm struggling with where to put this thing. They say it can pretty much go anywhere, and I could stand it up in front of the condenser but I just don't want to block even more of the radiator air flow.

There is a great spot on the back of the right inner fender with a straight shot for the hoses and it's not out in the open. Would actually look cool back there.

I'm trying to decide if there would be enough air flow through there or is this like a really bad (hot) place for something like this?

As long as it has good, clean, cool air flow....you should be good.

Some say not to by-pass the radiator...I have always ran the biggest cooler I could, and by-passed the radiator. Never an issue.
Never heard of anyone ever over cooling a transmission. (but I guess it could happen in Alaska, North Pole, South Pole...or such)

Thanks Doug, I think that There should be air moving through there as its open to the ground down by the frame. It's like a funnel from the open engine bay area down those huge inner fenders.

I guess I could always buy more hose and move it out front later if it's not cooling well enough. There is a spot in the far left corner next to the radiator (see pic) that would work. It would require about 8' worth of hose length though.

I need to keep the right side open because I have to run my cold air intake to the right.

That right fender well is so convenient, but I know putting up front will probably cool better......nothing's simple.

If you're doing a lot of track work, the more cooling the better. Running through the radiator can also help warm it up quicker if you want to run in cooler weather.

I was going to bypass my radiator but decided the more cooling the better.

Default Trans cooler

Ran out of room on my 33 ****** and mounted a small unit level with the floor about 2" standoff just in front of the left rear wheel. It did not have a fan but was concerned enough that I put a temp gauge on the pan. Found out that it was slow to warm up to 150 and would go to about 195 driving up mountains. On the down side of the mountain it would quickly drop to 130ish. Found the key was it was easy to cool while in lockup and most heat was generated pulling and not in lockup. Note that Bowtie says ideal is 150 and that some parts are aluminum and some steel so different expansion rates are designed to be happy at 150 degrees. I put 40K on the ****** and no problems.

Thanks!

No track time, it's just a 55 Olds 88 that I want to be able to cruise around whenever I want. That includes here in Phoenix in the summer.....

Like I said, I'd like to put it close by on that right inner fender with like 3 ft hoses. Wonder if up in the grill area with better (cooler) air but 8' hoses is better?

As long as you don't run a high stall converter you should be fine

My stock 2014 Silverado shows 192* on the drive home from work, on the hiway, not towing, cruising at 70mph, during a warm summer day (80*ish).

Just to compare...but sure my Camaro goes higher due to the 5000stall and a heavy foot

Motor is stock LS2 out of a 2006 GTO. Don't really plan any mods at this point. My next project will be more aggressive.

Just want a reliable cruiser with this one. The LS2 should give me what I need for this car.

So you guys think I can get away with the fenderwell mount?

Like I said, I can always move it out front later.

I think I will add a temp gauge so I know where I am at.

Default Trans cooler

On my '39 I put it up in front of the radiator just behind the grill. Used hoses to go from trans to frame then 3/8" brake line from there to cooler. Put a small single flare on the brake line then pushed the hose over it and a clamp.

When using "hose" for the trans cooler....remember, this is a high pressure system

Are you sure on the cooling circuit? There is trans rated hose however. At least last time I looked and that was for fluid compatibility.

All of the cooler that I looked at use hose....

On the Derale product the hose is "high pressure, high temperature hose".

I was thinking I would try to run 3/8" hard line most of the way to make it look nicer anyway.
