Default Fuel pump

Got to thinking about the cost, availability and durability of "over the counter" fuel pumps. Back when I did a TPI and later an LT1 I used the in-tank pump for an '88 Camero. They were cheap at about $50 over the counter at any parts store and lasted. Today, SOME pumps for the LSx engines are noisy, last a couple of hours (knockoffs) or expensive and not available at the local parts store. Got me to thinking about the '88 Camero pump. Looks the same as the pumps in the GM OEM module. First, will the '88 Camero pump live putting out 58 pounds vs 45 pounds as designed? Second, will the pump fit in an LSx in tank module for say an '03 trailblazer? Bottom line: will an '88 fuel pump live and work in a stock LSx environment?

Can't say for sure if it will fit that fuel sender but I dont see why not. It will work fine, I have a TPI pump in both my Nova and my '33. The Nova has well over 100k on the swap and the '33 has 86k and theyre both still going fine.

Oh and it's Camaro, with two A's, camero drives me crazy!!!

Sorry 'bout the misspell. Can you tell us how you adapted the TPI pump into the '33 and the CamAro? Did you make a stand alone tank insert or use a GM module and replace the pump?

In my Nova I weded the top sending unit rinf of a Camaro tank in the stock tank and used the Camaro sender. The '33 has a Tanks tank in it, and the pick upjust had two barbed fittings with a piece of plastic hose on them. I t took one of them off, hose clamped the pump to the other and put a piece of fuel hose between the pump and the barbed fitting.

A retroworx kit will let you use a late model camaro/ctsv fuel pump assembly and comes with the fuel pressure regulator adapter.

Thanks Nova, this is the kind of info I was looking for. This means I can go buy an in tank pump for an '88 Camaro which is meant for a TPI and 47 pounds then adapt it to the eBay off-shore junk I have for my LSx engine and it will put out the required 58 lbs. A little background...I have a Tanks tank in my '39 and discovered that the '03 Trailblazer pump would fit the tank nicely. The pump I got on line will only put out about 50 lbs and sets lean codes for both banks. Long term fuel trims at maxed at 25 percent. I want a pump that is available anywhere in case I'm traveling and need a new one. I have ordered a Carter unit from Rock Auto, will take the junk one out and see if I can adapt the 88 Camaro one into the module and keep it as a spare.

That sounds like a plan. I know the TPI pumps are meant to put out 43 psi, but my Corvette filter regulator in the '33 has always put out a consistent 58psi. Dont know if I'm harming it by making it put out more than its designed to but never had any problems with them. I do have a removable cover to the top of the tank and quick connects on the sender so if it did go out I could change it in half an hour anywhere if I had to. I too like parts that I can get anywhere since I drive the car all over, better peace of mind.
