Dakota Digital has a module that plugs into the OBD plug and reads all the info from the ECM to feed the Instrument cluster........No need to add additional senders or wires....

A 3.42 gear is nice and they tend to be quieter than 3.73s or 3.55s....something about the number of teeth on the ring and pinion gears...or this could be internet legend...

I run a 3:73 gear in the LS powered A-body wagon in my sig. I thought the same thing, but, I run a 28" tire and it actually works very well. First gear is very "usable"...
I thought my mileage would suffer also...but with a LS-6 cam 5.3, I can knock down 20-23 on the highway.
I think the 3.73's will be bitchin' in that big beautiful B-body.

We had two issues than needed to be resolved......#1....Fuel gauge didn't work.....ended up being a solder joint that failed inside the sender (had to pull the tank down to find it)......#2....Intermittently the starter would just "Click" "Click" like the Battery was dead....Humm!!......After checking everything out......the new starter was "Junk".....replaced the starter with a new one and everything is now perfect .............Then......After removing the Dead weight in the Engine compartment.......The front end of the car was now way too high......Gary adjusted the Coil-over shocks to lower the front end down to where it was before.............anyhow.........Here's a Video of the car running.......

Not sure what it had in it for a big block but I'm curious what you and Gary think of the big block verse LS power. I've got a buddy that has a 65 Biscayne and I'm trying to talk him into a LS swap instead of a big block.

20-23 MPG......again, what trans? Even with a 4L60, thats really good with 3.73s IMO
I run a 275-60-15 tire, and yes I run a 4l60e.
Again, I was a little concerned about the 3,73"s being to low, but now that I've ran them for a couple years, I'm very happy with both the mileage and the performance...
