Chevy C10, LS1/T56 build
Ive been on this site for a while and have sold some stuff in here, so I figured I could at least post my Chevy truck project.
I have a build thread over on gmsquarebody.com, http://www.gmsquarebody.com/forum/sh...ad.php?t=10021 but I figured I might as well have one on here also. Who knows, it might help someone doing the same swap.
Here was my first post back in 2014.....
Details:
SWB, Original Brown paint, original tan/brown interior, 103K on the 4.3, manual brakes & Steering, and the coolest part, 3 on the tree! It has the usual corner rot, but everything else, solid. There are quite a few road dings, but hell, Im not worried about those!
My Plan:
-Tune up. Not sure when it was last done, but she needs it! Runs and drives ok, but just seems down on power. AC blows cold so thats a bonus!
-Brake job. I hit em hard and I had one wheel lock up and it took a bit to stop.
-Radio. The stock, Cassette am/fm is toast, so its time for a modern stereo.
-Body work & paint. Hell no!
-Suspension. 4/6 drop
-Rims/tires. Stock steels widened and keeping the hubcaps!
-Exhaust. The CAT feel off, so Ill need to replace it with a Hi-Flow "Test" pipe.
Of course my step-daughter wants to drive it, eventhough she cant drive a manual...Hell, my whole neighborhood wants to drive it! You think I brought home a Limo or something as everyone was loving on it!
Anyway, here is a pic from yesterday when I picked it up. Ill get some more when I get home and start tearing into it.

I did a quick tune up last night. Nothing HP, just stock replacement parts.
This is Bone Stock down to the original Air pump!
No frills, low option PU. Manual brakes...
and manual steering.
Good ole TBI.
Im pretty happy with my ole brown truck. Once I get it running right and install a new radio, Ill then add the Lowering kit so I can drive the wheels off it! :peace:

Much better!
After driving the truck for awhile, it just kept having issues, so thats when I decided to do the swap.
Well, I found a T56 out of an 6 GTO and made the drive to Indiana to pick it up.
Here is the mid mount shifter conversion kit.
This was the first LS engine I was going to use...
Instead of throwing more money at my truck trying to keep what it has running. I figure its time to remove the 4.3/3 speed and start my LQ/T56 swap.
I have been gathering parts and Ill post as I go.
Here are some new pics.....
Accufab TB atop a Nitrous Outlet Plumbed, PUCK system.
BES built 6.0L with Milled/CNC'd heads,LS3 valves cut down, BTR .660 dual valvesprings, Wiseco flattop pistons (10.4 to 1) K1 Rods, stock crank, Cincy Speed's PUNISHER V2 Hyd roller cam, SLR lifters, IMIS Chain, melling oil pump, etc etc
QuickTime Bellhousing for the safety of my feet!
6 speed out of a GTO with the addition of a stage II upgrade kit and forward shifter option.
Hedman 1-7/8" headers. Ill get em coated after I know they fit w/o beating them with a hammer.
Hopefully, ole DD Brown will get down after this install. Im sure there will be some suspension issues, braking issues, steering issues, body roll issues, rust flying off issues etc etc, but Ill tackle those as I go.

Somewhere in the 2 years, I decided to put the LQ in my Chevy II. So I was always looking for another LQ or LS for the truck.
I finally came across a recently rebuilt LS1 that had a bad lifter. We went through it and everything looked good. I still needed a set of heads, so I fouund a set of 317s. I had the guys at BES cut down some LS3 intake valves, install those after they CNC'd the castings. We did a clean mill on the surface, as I came across a STUPID, SMOKING DEAL on a SC.
Dude came in selling a "Whipple" SC. He said he was paid to pull the blown up eng in a customers Humvee. Cust said F that SC!!
So we walk out to his truck and there is a Magnuson SC. I told him, dude thats just a Maggie, Not a Whipple. He asked me if it was worth scrap money. I told him I would give him $50 for it. He jumped at it!!
Best $50 I ever spent!!
Fast forward a few months....
I got my Lift installed this past weekend...
My "custom" Intercooler reservoir tank...
My LS1 with CNC'd 317 heads, cam and lil Maggie SC. Shifting a manual 6 speed out of a 2006 GTO...

I set my Intercooler reservoir and battery box in their places to get a feel for em.
The cooler, will hold an aluminum, 7 gallon water tank which will be a reservoir for my superchargers intercooler, I will run lines under the truck, up to the heat exchanger, then into the IC.
The tool box, will store my battery.
Worked on continuing the install the Vintage Air kit last night...
Then I came in to work today and my inserts arrived so I decided to install those...
I scored a FREE heat exchanger off a Shelby we worked on...
I also sourced some aluminum to make my intercooler reservoir tank and mocked it up.
Since Im running the Holley front drive system, no one makes a SC support bracket. So I fabbed one up.

Will the help of my buddies, 16 year old kid, we got the Vintage Air, "box" mounted up last night. It was a huge PITA!!
I was also able to get some other stuff done as well.
I got into a fight with the drill, and lost.
I got the old Manual box off...
and the new box mounted up.
I also got the new/used manual column and Vintage Air mounted up.

Ran into a snag last night while working on the IC reservoir...
This is where I started.
Got the hole cut.
Got the lid installed.
Set the tank in and marked where I needed to drill and then busted out the hole saw bit.
Verified that the holes matched up.
Then this happened.:whymewhyme:
Hopefully, I can run a tap through them and get my threads back. If not, hopefully my welding guy, Jason, can get new bungs welded on.
On a positive note, I did get my tank removed so I could switch out pumps.
Out with the old.
In with the new, 340lph Racetronix!
I had Jason weld up my sending unit...
-8 feed, -6 return
Pumped mounted.
By the skin of my teeth, these fittings actually cleared the bracing on the underside of the bed.
I got the "battery box" mounted up as well and feed grommets installed.
I need to make a 2" wide hold down bracket and then get it mounted.
I also got the Intercooler reservoir mounted and -10 lines run.
I messed up and forgot to mount a drain pep-**** before I installed the tank. Im not sure if I have the clearance to install one now that the tank is mounted. Ill do some more measuring and hopefully one will fit. Worst case, I make one up front somewhere.

I finally got my bench fixed up and mobile. So I fab'd up a bracket for the Heat Exchanger. Forgive my lack of skill, but Im working with a small vise and hammer.
I added an Adel clamp on the outlet side to help secure the HX.
Discretely hid. but still functional.
Spec 3+ clutch kit...
Ram SFI flywheel...
Quick Time SFI bellhousing...
Hooker crossmember...
Hurst shifter handle and Tick remote bleeder...

Now Im getting somewhere!!
I called my neighbor (6'6", 290 lbs) and he and I got the trans installed!! :party36:
In turn, that allowed me to install these... 1-7/8" Hedman Headers!
They are a tight fit and I have to "clearance" the pass motor mount and drivers side frame, but Im happy with them.
I also had to cut my floor to clear the T56.
Showing off the CNC'd 317 casting's intake runner before I install the manifold.
BAM! SC installed.
I was really not worried about it, but I had to double check to make sure....It fits! LOL!
I got a quick reminder that yes, razor blades are sharp! Man that hurt like Hell!!
No band aids could be found, so I made my own.
Finger all fixed up, so I worked a couple more hours. I got the intercooler lines run...
and the fuel lines run to the inlet side. -8 into a T, then -6 lines feed the rails.
Stock LS1 throttle body and a custom SC support bracket that I had water jetted. It will get powder coated when Im finished with fitting everything.

Now Im caught up! This was last night....
I finished running and securing the intercooler reservoir lines...
Here is the stock Ford Shelby IC pump mounted.
Return line coming up the pass side frame rail.
Return line secured around suspension.
And, Im a DUMBASS! Looks like I had a few too many beers when mounting the cooler as its not centered. Im not gonna move it as this aint no show truck! :party36:
I started messing with the AC lines again.
Not happy with the way Vintage ran the lines. I understand it will clear the wheel wells, but Im going to call them and see if I can route them differently.
Im so glad I made this work bench mobile. Maybe the Sears casters roll a bit too good, but its nice to be able to move it around.
