Default Ls1 to th400 starter issue

Can anyone tell me what starter I need to bolt up to an 02 ls1 that has a th400 with a 168 tooth flex plate.
Tried the stock starter the bednix gear makes a loud think and sticks in the flex plate.
Have the power wire directly from the battery to the starter.
Ground cable to the motor isn't installed yet could that be the issue?

Which flex plate.

The transmission has zero effect on your starter.

I don't have it handy out of town for work until tomorrow. It's a dual drilled plate I run a 10" converter. Everything bolted up perfectly just having the starter issue now. Have the spacer between the flex plate and the converter.

Maybe that flex plate is made in such a way that it doesn't need a spacer. I know companies make them like that. Might be what you have. Is it maybe mounted backwards?
