Default Keeping AFM / VVT in a swap?

I'm sure this has been asked but I didn't find it, so here I am.
I have a 1975 Jeep Wagoneer. 4WD, 4,500 lbs.
I want to put a 5.3 liter with AFM or possible a late model 4.3 V6 in it. The 4.8... maybe. No gas savings vs the 5.3 with AFM but more power than the 4.3. Dunno.
Goal is dead-nuts reliable DD with 15 mpg minimum.
Can the VVT / AFM features be made to work properly in a swap application?

Hi, one method is to fit a "stand alone" ECU.

My ECU-882C-1-TTL will run all the items including the VVT, and more, that you request.

First, I loved your truck build. I can't speak to the VVT, but I would highly suggest if you want "dead nuts reliable" you consider not doing a AFE engine, or replace the AFE camshaft/lifters to eliminate the AFE. I have had to replace both the camshaft/lifters in my wife's 2007 Envoy Denali (5.7 with AFE) at 130,000, and my Bo-in-law just lost the engine in his 2011 Tahoe after a AFE lifter came apart at 95K (of course out of warranty). When I changed the cam/lifters all that had to be done was turn off the AFE in the tune.

Anyway, research 2007-2011 GM engines with AFE before you go that route. Good luck with whatever you choose, and start a thread, please.

I run vvt in my ly6 /whipple 2.9 . Mastmotorsports sells the whole package. Cam, springs, ecm, harness . Comes with a tune + tuning software. You could ditch the afm and keep the vvt. Or just change cam, lifters and delete that part from the tune. Easy enough to do.

15mpg doesn't seem to be too lofty of a goal in my opinion. I would think just a bone stock 5.3 with a real good tune should get you there, and by real good tune, I don't mean the first person you talk to. Get some referrals from actual customers and maybe talk to some hot rodders in your area. Find someone who will do a dyno and street tune and have them tune it for MPG and I think you'd be set.
