Default New Join-needing help on older conversion

I apologize if this is not the proper place for my query.

My truck is a 1989 Chevy Silverado c1500.

My issue is replacing steering column.

I cant find a direct replacement.

I have one out of an 89 Bronco. Here is the problem. The tranny linkage from the bottom of the column is 90 degree from my oem column and the transmission link "arm" (Books said this was a direct fit). Also the mount to the firewall is not correct.

Thats being said, has anyone done this conversion at all? Lookin for answers and need this done yesterday :S Truck is down until resolved.

Thank You very much.

89 Ford Bronco column is a direct replacement for an 89 Chev Silverado? Better get a better book,or learn how to read it...

Lol! Thats what I was thinking.

A 1989 Silverado column shouldn't be that hard to find, they're the same from 88-94 if I'm not mistaken. I would get one of those.

Appreciate the comments. That "Book" comment was what I was told from the computer system at the shop where the purchase was made. Wasn't an actual "Book", it was just easier to say. My reading comprehension is just fine, no need to hurl insults on a guys first post asking for help.

Appreciate the help

Sounds like the place selling you the column just said that to make a sale. No way a Ford column is ever going to be a direct replacement in a Chevrolet. I would look for a better salvage yard.

The common failures on the GM columns are pretty well known; is it an intact column with a broken component? I have replaced every switch and basic upper parts in GM columns in a couple hours or less over the years.

Even so, there are thousands and thousands of these in salvage yards, and what columns directly fit is documented in Hollanders interchange systems; you got sold a bill of goods if a Bronco column was sold to you.

If everything else about the Bronco column fit, custom bending a shift linkage arm may be best made by a shop that has torches, and the pattern at the firewall is a plate, some holes, and some boots away from working, I have done that before.

Take it back, and prepare to spend money on the right part. There is a time and a place to make different parts work, and a steering column has too much to custom-fit on a common, common vehicle.

Default Done

Totally agree on the salvage yard guys.

Had searched anywhere near our county, including all salvage yards and parts warehouses, etc and none are available or all Silverado columns were just purchased in bulk form all yards (what I was told again). Due to a car show coming up and someone capitalizing on sales on a weekend at the car show here.

I Wound up tearing the columns both completely apart down to the knuckles and wiring by myself.

From the knuckle to the wheel everything fits, including the tilt, cc, pulse wipers and lights. Took me the day to tear them both down, but it is done.

Thank you for the reference to the interchange system. Will keep that in the memory banks. Appreciate the candor and assistance.
