pcm electrical help please! exciter on alternator miswired... Hi guys,
I apologize if this is in the wrong place. I need help with electrical, and not sure where to post it. I tried the PCM Diagnostics group, but apparently my post was disallowed.
I've got a problem. My alt is drawing power 100% of the time. More precisely, the exciter is. I've confirmed it by cutting the exciter line, watching the draw, and reconnecting it.
I've got an LS1, 4L60E, and PCM from a 1999 Camaro SS in a restomod. I'm finding errors in the wiring that was installed that I have to correct.
I've found wiring diagrams on Autozone's repair assist page, but the diagrams don't confirm switched power. From what I see, wire# 15 or #61 needs to be used from the PCM to run the alternator's exciter. Tracing wires, I found that #15 is blank on my PCM. The wire in #61 is a brown with white stripe wire, and has no power on it; switched or otherwise.
I think the solution is to cut the line from the always on and put it to a switched power source; and I think it's supposed to be that #61 wire, but can't find anything to confirm it.
So my questions:
-is there supposed to be switched power on line #61?
-can I put it to any switched power source? Including one that is already wired?
-prob best to inline fuse it?...what size fuse would I need? stock alternator; a/c style serpentine setup.

When I rewired my car I simply put switched power with a resistor inline to the alternator. Worked great. I forget the resistor rating. If you have trouble finding the rating I can dig it up for you.
