Default Electrical Back Up battery

Ok guys. So I am almost done with my swap but one of the only things I have left to figure out is a memory back up battery or power source. if any one here can help me on how to install, wire, etc I would really appreciated. Just for the record what I am trying to accomplished is the since I just order and installed new Dakota digital gauges every time i disconnect the power source to battery I will have to redo all settings such as clock, type of fuel sender, etc.also i dont want the PCM to loose driving habits and or normal settings.

Can you just take the gauges off the switched power and give them constant power from the battery you have? I've never heard of anyone needing a backup battery or a pcm losing things due to a lack of power. Doesn't mean it isn't an issue, but if it is that's news to me.

How often do you unhook your battery? I do when I store my cars, but I only have to reset the radio. I cant believe that those high dollar gauges would need to be reser whenever the battery is unhooked, but I guess it's possible.

You should only have to reset the clock. All of your settings should be stored in the Dakota Digital EPROM. As far as the PCM, the only thing you are resetting is the fuel trims and any current trouble codes.

Most service manuals suggest hooking up a battery charger before removing a battery. I have a battery tender jr wired into the car to keep the battery alive through the winter. A very worthwhile investment. Just don't let the cables ground out if you do remove the battery.

You can also buy small batteries that plug into the cigarette lighter to keep power to the electronics while you change out a battery. Google battery memory saver
