Need ideas for a conversion please I have a 1988 Vixen 21TD RV that uses a BMW 2.4 turbodiesel linked to a Renault UN-1 5 speed manual transaxle. I built a new, more powerful engine and it stripped the ring and pinion and blew 5th gear out the back of the case. Since I'm unable to find another transaxle, I want to convert it to something modern. This is a PUSHER configuration, could I use a Corvette transaxle and flip the differential over to make it a pusher? I'd be willing to swap the turbodiesel if necessary for a Chevy gas engine to make it simple and reliable. I'd appreciate any input. It presently has IRS with a D'dion tube suspension. I really want to get this rv back on the road, had it for 20 years and am fond of it.
I may be confusing the issue -- but the contemporary Corvette set up doesn't use a "transaxle" per se. It's the T56 transmission bolted directly to the differential housing. As such, it's quite a bit "longer" than a traditional transaxle. I don't speak "RV" -- not sure what the difference between a pusher and a....well, a "not pusher" is....educate me. Guessing the engine is at the very back behind the rear axle 911-style?
As mentioned the corvette doesn't really have a transaxle setup, it's more of an IRS bolted directly to a transmission and would be much longer then your current UN-1 setup. You might look into the porsche transaxles, but I'm not sure of their torque ratings.

RE: above - LOTS of 911's out there with LSx motors bolted to the Porsche transaxles, so there's some level of reliability that's available with 300-400 lb-ft of torque through them. Don't know what the output of the Bimmer 6 diesel is however....
