If you are on FB, my buddy in Wisconsin is starting his own wheel distribution company. Klotz Bros. Racing. I'm not sure what he can or can't get or prices, but it's something to look at.

I know it a ways off from your progress but what are you doing for door windows? Are they going to go up and down? Are you going to use the factory regulators and motors? Just curious!

Since I'm extending the doors 6" , I went to the junkyard and found a mercedez coupe that matches the stock window almost exact, but 5" longer. So I'm going to have to make all tracks to make it work. Not hard, just time consuming. I'm trying to save weight, so it'll be roll up, no regulators. The rear side windows will be made of lexan.

Beyond awesome! Sometimes it's hard to tell insanity from genius, but I'm pretty sure this is the latter.

Unfortunately no, not yet anyway... I got a side job doing a ton of sheetmetal work on a 55 chevy belair, which is almost done. Will be primering that one next week, and will be giving it back to the owner so I'll have my garage and time back. Hopefully in about a week or two, I'll be back working on this monster...trust me, I've been itching to get into it.

I pay for this project by doing side jobs, that's y it'll be a slow process, but ill be able to do plenty on this one for a while until the extra money runs out lol.

(288ft of tubing is waiting to be bent and welded into the insane rollcage here at my house, so I'll have plenty of work to do)

Will update with pics soon!!

sold my cobra 8.8 diff that I was going to use for the car, and decided to go with a ford explorer 8.8.. it's looks a lot stronger, and massive compared to the cobra. Also has better mounting points.

Look at the comparison..

Cobra 8.8
Explorer 8.8

The internals of the Cobra and the Explorer are identical. Both use 8.8 rear diffs and both have 31 spline axles. One thing to keep in mind is that the inner stub axles on the Explorer are different than the Cobra. They are both 31 spline, but the seal diameters are different.

I do much prefer the Explorer casting and the diff cover will make mounting in your project easier!

I don't have many before pics, most of the things I did, can't be seen unless u know it there. I replaced the rear floors, all body mount brackets, whole rear deck lid including trunk hinges (transfered from a donor 55) , replaced the complete dash, cleaned up the firewall and a bunch of other patch panels...but I'm just glad it's done now.

Yea I know it's identical and I've always liked the explorer diff a lot more. So much beefier, and the mounting looks to be way more sturdy. I've seen many pics of cobra guys breaking the front ears off the diffs, and since I'll be getting ~600whp to the rear (67/33 transfer case split) I wanted to get the stronger of the two.

Wasn't aware of the inner stubs difference tho, thanks for the info. I'll make sure to remember that when it comes time to get axles made. (Years from now lol)

Contact Frank at The Driveshaft Shop. They make billet inners for the Cobra and the Explorer...and can make any custom axles you need.

Finally got around to working on it again. Hopefully progress picks up now. Started working on the IRS, still have plenty to go. Don't pay attention to the drivetrain, nothing is mounted or mocked, it's all out of wack right now lol.

Wow this is a really amazing build. I'm doing an LS swap in a Pontiac Solstice and I'm considering AWD. Already have the T56 and 8.8 it's, however I'm trying not to cut the entire tunnel out of the car (too narrow the way it is lol).

Great work, I'm subscribing!

Interesting !!

Curious as to why the odd engine-gearbox arrangement, vs just bolting the gearbox to a BH then to the engine ?
