Default LS3 or L99

I am planing an S10 drag truck with LS power using a late model Camaro engine/trans take out. I want the auto trans but can't decide if I should get the LS3 without the manual trans and buy the 6L80 and modify the harness or get a complete L99 drop out and delete VVT & DOD. What are your thoughts.

It really depends on you, and what you want. You can ask 100 people, and if 99 of them are drag racers, and only 1 of them road races, you will get 99 of them answering 1 way and 1 the other.

I daily my truck. If I were to do it again, I would have started with a 4L80e trans, just because I am tired of fixing 4L65's at this point, and I don't even have boost behind mine yet.

For the $ I would do the L99 vs LS3 just because of price IMO. Trans is irrelevant, and is up to you. If your not doing your own harness feel free to reach me via pm if you want some advice.

If you want to keep VVT it can add a serious advantage over the LS3. I almost wish my LS3 crate had it, but then again my cam is pretty much maxed out as far as that goes. I'd only have a few degrees to play with lol.

It's just a thought, and I'm sure some folks are going to say delete it, but it's some pretty cool technology in that you can advance down low and retard up high. So in theory you can have your cake and eat it too. There's not a ton of support out there for VVT cams yet, but the market may eventually go that route. It's still a fairly new thing, 10 years in the making at best for GM.

I just think a lot of folks are hesitant about new technologies like that, but at this point I think it's proven itself reliable.

Otherwise just go ahead and get the LS3. I stroked mine out to a 427. It's a strong motor, no power adders. It will offset the cost of converting over from VVT and DOD. And to hell with DOD. I've deleted that for more than one person, even did one a week ago.

This guy said it. But **IF** you go L99, either convert it to hallow intake valves ($200 LS3 valves) and run whatever trans ya want.

You need to pick a power or performance goal to get any real advice.

I've spun the L92 solid valves to 8400 for over 7 years now. No ptv problems here. EPS cam, 0.0080" preload, single beehives, 1.8" installed height
