Default Rear 02 senors or delete?

Hello,

I see that most vehicles have 4 02 sensors, 2 front and 2 rear. I also see that some people eliminate the rear 02 sensors. I'm curious what benefit this has, or what functionality would be lost be eliminating the rear two sensors. Would aspects like tunability be lost?

My vehicle is a 1978 caprice with a 2004 avalanche ly7 and 4l60e. The car will have true dual exhaust and may or may not have cats.

Thanks,
Brandon

People delete the rear 02s because they are not needed when you are not using catalytic converters. In an OEM system the 4 02s are split into one on each bank before the cats and then after. So if you arent using cats, the rear 02s pretty much serve no purpose.

The rear O2's are there to test/monitor the effectiveness of the CATS and the front O2's over the long term - required by EPA so that CAT life of 100k miles (or something like that) is met. So even with CATS, removing them removes the test/monitor function. Good front O2's and CATS, still = clean exhaust.

If you are running cats, and have functioning rear O2's, keep them hooked up. Nothing to gain disconnecting them.

Except there are two more somewhat expensive components to go bad and have to replace in the future. The less features to go wrong and cost money int he future, the better.
