Default Power Steering Lines

I am converting a 1986 Monte Carlo with a LS3. The camaro the motor came out of had power steering lines that ran from one side of the engine compartment and then back. Does anyone know why that was done and does anyone know if I need to do the same thing with the motor in the Monte Carlo? I posted a picture of it. Thank you in advance for any help. I would like to eliminate it to clean up the engine compartment.

If the line was a metal line, it was probably there to act as an inexpensive oil cooler.

My power steering lines run a total of about 8-10" from the pump straight down to the rack. They needn't be any longer than that unless your pump is further away from your pump/box.

When I did my 2000 S10 and a 1973 Nova we used the lines that were on the S10 and Nova, Not the lines from the donor engine. On the S10 I was able to bend and reshape the high pressure line to make it fit the LS3 pump. On the Nova it had standard thread on the Hose end so we had to buy a metric adapter but again just bent the stock Nova line to make it fit.

GM did that in taxis and cop cars to make turning right easier. It's an old nascar trick

It is mostly rubber. I would love to shorten it to clean up the engine compartment.

Look for a local hydraulic shop. Most can custom make PS hoses in whatever length and fitting combination you need.

My local NAPA Auto Parts store built me a custom hose exactly to my design and with the connector fittings I required - about $53. I handed the guy a piece of stiff electric fence wire bent into the exact shape and length I needed. He returned about 20-25 minutes later and handed me perfection. No leaks and I'm very happy with it. He used Gates "Megasys" hose with "Megacrimps" on the ends. No complaints at all.

And the folks at my local Pirtek shop did the same for me.

So, should be lots of resources out there unless, of course, the OP happens to live in the middle of nowhere.

I tried this route twice and both times they were just barely off that they wouldn't work. The line has basically no twist in it and not very forgiving. After having both not work I just went with high pressure AN parts :/

You got lucky!
