Well something is definitely warped. Cleaned everything up and did a test fit without the gasket. The head does not sit flush with the block. When I put the head in place I can sort of rock it back and forth like if was bowed in the middle. I have a video that I'll post once I figure out how to do it .

The head was refurbished at a reputable machine shop so I wonder if it's the block. Man I hope not .

Wow.

I would take a steel or aluminum ruler, level or anything with a straight machined edge and place it across the head and block to see which is warped. Shine a light behind it and see if you can see the light on the other side. If you can, check it with feeler gauges. I've got a feeling it's too far to repair but you never know.

I hope it's the head(s) as they are cheaper and simpler than replacing the block.

Update! Nothing is warped! It was the GD locating dowels!! I ordered new ones but apparently thet aren't as easy to insert as I thought. What's the proper way to insert these? I lightly tapped them with a mallet but that obviously wasn't sufficient. It seems like one goes in much easier than the other

Have you done a coolant pressure test? I did on mine and no issues but I still get water out the driver tail pipe vs the passenger side tail pipe. I know we get condensation, but I see water droplets on,y on one side.
We also did a quicky compression test and #7 was within spec with the others I tested.
Last thing is to do a leak down test but with all the things we’ve seen it’s internal.
I think I am just going to have to pull this lq9 and rebuild it.
If it's oil fouled then it could be from either worn out guides or valve stem seals in the heads or worse the piston rings.

‘replaced the all valve stem seals, didn’t make a difference.
may be the rings but it has good compression. Unless the oil is sealing it up to get a good reading.

Sometimes ring issues don't rear their ugly head until the engine heats up some. My rings didn't seat on the 7 & 8 my first time out and as a result the the plugs kept getting oil soaked. It wouldn't start smoking right away but once it heated up you could see the blue haze and when you got into the throttle and then came out of it you'd think I was out there spraying for mosquito's. Have you run a leak down test on the engine?

Since you have it apart it wouldn't be a bad idea to go through the cylinders with a flex hone to clean them up and install new rings.

‘That’s exactly what it does. Cold start not really any smoke or very faint smoke.
‘Once it’s warmed up and driving around, it’s smoking and definitely smokes on deceleration bad.
‘Just like if I’m smoking for mosquitoes also.
‘No no leak down test yet and I may not as I’m pretty sure it’s the rings now with all the reading and posts.
‘I just have to pull it and rebuild it
