Default Trans Temp readout appears and disappears

Hello all,

I had an occurrence that struck me as strange and was curious if anyone can shed some light on the issue. I had a Dakota Digital dash which pulls info from the OBD2 port. This allows me to read the transmission temp. I cut the car off one night with the display showing the trans temp. The next morning it was reading -40 (negative 40) degrees F. It never changed so I cycled through the list of displays and then I no longer had the option to view the transmission temp. I drove the car about 50 miles and cut it off for a few hours. When I got back in the trans temp was back again and reading correct.

Has anyone had this happen before?

Thanks,
Brandon

Bad connection(s) or sensor on its way out?

Agreed.
Poor connectivity would be my guess.

Vetteman,
I've had this exact issue on two swaps now. The first was my 54 3100 with a duramax, just like yours it's a dakota digital plugged into the OBD2 port, it worked great for a week...worked 1/2 the time for another week and now 3 years later it doesn't work more often than it does. Dakota digital was no help resolving the issue.
My most recent project is a 58 wagon with a ls swap....Dakota digital plugged in to the OBD2 port... it's been running a year or so and it's a solid 50% of the time reading. Didn't bother calling them on this one. Probably should have. I can unplug the Dakota digital stuff and plug in any various scanner/ laptop and get trans temp readings on both vehicles...plug Dakota digital back in and nothing.

Thanks for the feedback. I'll double check the wires, but from the way it was acting I suspected it could be related to something at fault with the Dakota Digital unit.

Have a friend with an 02 GMC truck with a 6.0/4L80E swap....trans temp (via internal sensor) reads -38° on the scanner until the temp is over 200°, then appears to read normally...I had him order a new trans harness (valve body) to see if it fixes the problem.
