Question V6 Firebird to LS3

Hello everyone!! Im new ro the forums. Im here seeking LS3 knowledge. Im looking to purchase a donor vehicle sometime in the future and swapping over the ls3 and trans. What all will i need that i wont find on the donor vehicle?? Any help at all will be greatly appreciated!! Thanks!!

p.s. if it helps any I own a 97 firebird

This should be in the Conversion and Hybrid section, not in the Gen V Engine section. LS3 is Gen IV anyway

Thank you for informing me. Im new to the forumn and new to the forumn world. My question was directed to a w o l. Im just digging up bones right now to get some direction on the swap. Thanks again for the info!

Correct. The many duplicate threads have been merged/deleted/edited down to just this one in the correct section.

I did an LS swap on my '95 Firebird. There is a link in my signature to the build thread.

If your donor vehicle isn't a '98+ f-body, you'll need a few things from one to make the swap work. The first item off the top of my head... the V6 K-member on your '97 Firebird will not work with a LS engine. The engine mounts will not work. You can get a used LS K-member or buy a nice aftermarket tubular k-member. I was on a budget, so I went with a used k-member.

I believe Holley now makes motor mount adaptors so you can install a LS based engine into what was originally a V6 sub frame, allowing you to keep your original V6 sub frame vs. swapping in a LS based V8 subframe.

The stock K-members being non-compatible with this swap is no longer the case as Hooker Blackheart LS engine mounting stands for the stock V6 and LT1 4th-gen K-members were released a few years ago. It’s a drop-in installation, but does require swapping in an LS1 steering rack and shaft if the user wants to run commonly available LS1 long tube headers.
