Default Lsx 240sx and Denver Emissions

Does anyone know What all I would have to have working for a internally stock 5.3 to pass emissions in a ‘93 240sx in Denver? Will it just have to have cats, rears 02’s, no CEL, and pass the smog dyno? Or will it have to have evap, egr, etc?

I would call a Denver-area smog shop and ask them

If the Envirotest "techs" figure out what you have in there, it will have to meet the emission standards of the donor vehicle. They may not, because those testers are just testers. They don't know a lot about cars, I've slipped a TBI conversion past them without a second glance. Figure out a way to make it look stock-ish Nissan and take it on a day when the lines are super long and they're busy.

If they do spot it, you'll have to get it inspected at the station downtown and go thru some antics. Those folks can be pompous asses.

Usually, it’s specs of the newest model - recipient or donor.

And if course it varies wildly state to state. Here in NC, if it’s OBDII then they simply pull codes. No codes = emissions pass. Prior 95/6 older back to 35 years old, it’s a visual inspection for emissions equipment - cats, egr, etc. Older than 35 - no inspection at all.

I find that amusing. I have to inspect my Ram and other cars yearly that are for the most part safe but my 41 year old Nova never has to be. Its perfect but it could as easily be a hulk with nothing working.

In Cali nothing before 1975 is smog checked. That is when cats were introduced in most cars and 1/2 ton trucks

Same here in CO currently. They used to do a one-time on the pre-75 stuff.

The OP's Nissan will have to have all the LS emissions stuff if they spot it.

Basically here chassis-related emissions ( evap and converters) must be the year of the vehicle, and engine-related to the year of the engine. Again, any pre-75 vehicle is not checked. I wish they would go back to a 25-year drag like they did up to about 2000. Not many pre-94 vehicles to worry about.

That's the thing on giving up on inspections -- just not that many vehicles (relatively) on the road that are 35+ years old. In most jurisdictions - year/engine related emissions systems IF the engine is NEWER than the vehicle. If the engine is older, the later emissions regs of the vehicle rule. Also, no 'truck' engines in cars. Of course, they're not always successful in figuring all that out. I'm just glad I'm out of that business for my hot rod. Nothing newer than 35 years old for me here in that regard. Too much trouble and uncertainty.
