Where to Start

Morning All
Recently purchased a 78 Trans am and it had a LS1 5.3 conversion in it.
Already had to rebuild the 4L60E thats attached to it.
My question is it starts idle high and I cant find where or why, I am assuming a vacuum leak but it starts differently
every time..aaaarrrggghhhh .
Second should I just take it to a tuning shop and have the computer reprogrammed so I can get a base line
or????
What should be my steps to a successful knowledge base of the engine and getting the @#$%^ running nice.

Does it have the DLC (Data Link Connector) so you can hook up a scan reader and pull codes? What is RPMs at on start up? Does it idle down as it warms up or stay high?
