Looking to do my first LS swap hey guys so im looking to LS swap my 1998 chevy pickup and pull out the god awful 305....now i already decided im going with a 6L not sure if il go lq4 or 9 i do know the only difference is pistons i was looking around the 07 year possibly...what gen would that make it? im new to this ls stuff and have no clue as to what to look for in parts catalogs.

I tend to prefer the Gen4 engines, but then you have things like VVT and AFM to deal with, although many Gen$ engines don't have either. It just depends. Keep in mind, all Gen4 engines have DBW, which I actually prefer, but some people don't. If you combine the engine with a 4l60 or 4l80 trans, I would look into the Holley Terminator X Max to run it all.

99 to 06 are GenIII, in 07 they made both. If the truck looks like an 06, then it will have a GenIII engine. If the truck looks like the newer body style it will be a GenIV. I would look for an earlier engine if you want to keep it simple. That way you can still use your speedometer and cruise control if it matters to you.
