Finishing a few things for summer driving my 1948 Chevy 3100 pickup with 07 Classic 5.3/4L60E conversion.. I have driven about 50 trouble free miles. Now there is a whine when I put the pickup in neutral. The noise goes away in all other shift positions. This is an engine transmission I removed from a 2007 Classic (early model) 2500 4 door pickup with less than 10,000 miles in 2008. Any thoughts on what the whine might be?

Doing it with clutch pushed in or engaged (pedal released)?
If it whines in neutral with foot OFF the clutch pedal it is in the tranny.
If it whines when clutch pedal depressed, it is the pilot bearing/bushing.

5.3 V8 engine, 4L60E 4 speed automatic overdrive transmission. Whine noise is only in neutral, no noise in all other shift positions. Only in neutral

Sorry I overlooked the 4L60E notation and assumed a manual tranny. My bad!
Sounds like an internal problem. Does it still shift and drive normally otherwise?

Remove the serpentine belt and try it. This will eliminate power steering pump and make it easier to hear. Where does it sound like it. Coming from?

I have seen quite a few 4L60's make that whine, I can't say for sure but I think it's the front pump. One was even rebuilt and still whines to this day. Hasn't hurt anything just mildly annoying.
