I have a 2001 LR4 (4.8) and I don't see a serial number in the typical locations. Is there another spot or have the numbers just corroded away? I'm looking for the numbers so I can get
a new title for my 49 Chevy. Michigan requires pre-1955 cars to have engine serial number as the new VIN. I do have a copy of the donor truck title and I emailed the SOS on what to do without an engine serial number.
As you may know that older vehicles used the number on the block as a VIN. The practice was done away with back in the '50s some time. Newer engines do not have a serial number stamped on them either. What I would do is use the VIN from the '49 (if you have it) and stamp it on the block.

I know VIN's are not on LS engines. I could use the 49's number since the original engine was scrapped, but I'm waiting for an answer from the SOS. Here are samples of numbers on LS blocks in the locations that I posted. Kudo's to the original posters.
