Build your own oil pan?
Build your own oil pan? I have been looking at fabricated steel oil pans and it occurred to me that everyone starts with the same basic stamping. They cut a hole in it then add their own sump.
Does anyone know how or where to get a hold of this stamping? It would be nice to start with a fresh piece rather than buying a complete pan only to cut it up. I have a welder and I'm not afraid to use it.
The base stamping would be handy for storing engines too.

A new china aluminum pan should be your starting point. No old embedded oils to contaminate the weld. Stiffer. Dissimilar expansion rates of metals are best. The F-body pans have been out there for a few years and work fine. Not sure if you'll easily find other models.
I was thinking about using steel because I'm not familiar with welding aluminum. I do see a lot of people welding aluminum successfully for the first time. I have an early F-body pan that will get cut and welded if the steel blank doesn't pan out ( no pun intended ).
This engine is going into a '77 Vega so there are no economical options on the market. On paper the Holley 302-3 looks like it might come close but I'm not willing to spend that kind of money on a maybe and I would rather not make any major compromises on the position of the engine. I also want to avoid any major surgery on the body.
