Default 5.3 Ls to th350 Detent Cable problem

So I have a 5.3 ls and a th350 in my 79 firebird. I have rather ignored the Detent cable and it has been driving ok however shifting way into third very fast so I think I’m foreseeing a problem in the future with my trans overheating because I have looked at the trans fluid and I believe it is considerably darker so I think it’s time to put in a detent cable. The problem with this is I seriously don’t know how. Everywhere I look it kinda seems like people are dealing with 700r4s and then hooking the cables up to the gas pedal or something weird(in my opinion). But what I’ve also read is they hook up the cable to the throttle body, which is what I’m going for, but I’m not 100% sure on how to do this. I have the stock 5.3 truck intake and I’ve heard you may need to weld something to the bottom of it so you can get it to kick out actually; another weird solution through different sources. But is there any definite solution anybody has or any recommendations as a whole?

i have also been considering just getting a manual valve body to try and defer working on this because it seemed really complicated to me for some reason, plus the manual valve body is always cool lol

What stall, gears and do you have a cooler?

The detent cable on a TH350 doesn't do the same thing as a 700R4. The cable on a 700R4 controls the line pressure and will cook the trans if not used or adjusted correctly.

it’s just a stock rearmed from a 79 firebird formula, I know they are highway gears and something like 2.89 or something. But I’m gonna out in a 2,200-2,800 stall converter and the trans cooler is in my radiator

for the 700r4 yes it will dry it but the detent cable, if not installed, will make the trans not know when to upshift so it uses vacuum to do it and won’t be able to down shift into lower gears. So it will upshift quickly into third and stay in third and is making my trans act unruly

no I have not just because I am not currently working on my car, but I am thinking of just getting something similar to the lokar LS/Th350 cable, drilling a small hole in the cable throttle bracket, the threading the cable mount it and just gonna weld up a mounting bracket. That’s just my thoughts at the moment
