Gear Indicator Switch....what is it exactly?
Now for my chevelle I am using a painless harness (just the plain stand alone ls swap harness). and there are a couple things I am unsure of and googled but still a little unsure.
The big one is the "gear indicator switch". First off, what exactly is it? My guess from googling is it has something to do with fuel economy or the display on the dash that tells you what gear you are in.
The Painless book, just says it "these are necessary to make the trans work properly. I don't have it hooked up right now. I am planning on firing it up today later this morning when I swing by the body shop. But it will still be in paint jail for a couple of months so only need the car to run enough right now to be moved around easier instead of them having to push it.
The second one is the brake switch. I have never wired one up previously. Doesn't that just mean the converter won't lock up? I had driven this car a bit with no issues and had not connected the brake switch before. I do intend on finally connecting for better gas milage once it is back from paint.

Generally speaking, the gear shift indicator is for the dash display. You should not need it for any proper transmission functionality. The brake switch for the transmission is so that when you get on the brakes, the torque converter unlocks. It isn't 100% necessary, as there are other parameters in the tune that will unclock the converter based on other factors, like RPM and road speed. It's probably more of a safety issue, more than a drivability issue.

My bad, I thought it would be obvious it's a 4l60E. No point in using anything else.
I still plan on hooking up the brake switch. But I thought it was weird that painless says the brake switch has to be hooked up to function properly.
Also I think I talked to you a couple years ago when I started putting this engine in this car before paint jail.
