Using A Factory Airbox

Default Using A Factory Airbox

Hi all. Currently doing a 6.0lq4 swap in my 73 Firebird with LS1 intake, ICT low mount alternator and truck PS pump above it. Also using the 98-02 passenger car water pump. I’m going to use a Holley Terminator X for engine management. All that said, I’d like to run a factory style closed airbox in front of one of the front fenders, to draw air from underneath and potentially run further ducting to draw air from the gap between the valance and nose.

I have an 04 Silverado box that is a little too big.

1. Can anyone recommend a factory airbox that would work?
2. I have the 70-76 ra air hood with the scoops opened up. Has anyone fabbed up a setup that ties into that hood?

Unless you find someone using the same engine in the same car and who wants to use an OEM airbox at the same place as you, no one can really accurately help you on this.
What I can say is that when I installed the LQ9 in my '70 Impala, I wanted to use the airbox that came with the engine (from an '05 Silverado). I cut the back of the airbox some, closed the gap with fiberglass, and was able to mount it on the inner fender well, towards the front of it, getting fresh air from the wheel well. Works great. When I cut it, I was careful to still be able to fit the air filter.
So, I would say, can't you cut your airbox to make it fit?

That was the purpose behind the post; to see if someone else has swapped an LS into a 2nd gen F-body and used a factory air box. I figured at this point someone has? I can cut the bottom of the truck box and make it work if push comes to shove, but first I’d like to see if I can find one that doesn’t require that. FB marketplace has a 16’ Camaro air box for sale near me, which may be a better fit, but before I start collecting air boxes, I’m checking here.

Here's what I would do, if no one chimes in with a direct fit airbox: Take measurements where you'd like the box to go, and then go to a pick and pull junkyard and search for a box that meets your specs. If it were my car, however, I'd buy a Spectre cut to fit LS swap cold air kit and just mount an open element filter in the fender. Running an enclosed airbox is just going to kill power, and why do the swap if not to get the power an LS provides?

I've thought about this a bit over the years. What turned me away from an opening in the inner fender is what happens if you get caught in heavy rain? Will the water from the tire will a bunch of moisture get into the air filter?
On my LS swaps I've had great luck with a fairly large cone filter routed to the side of the engine. A few pics.
80 Camaro. LS3 swap.
73 Camaro LS3 swap.
67 Nova LS2 sleeved and stroked to 427 cubes.
I just try to keep the air filter away from the radiator.
