Starter and relay trouble Im working on a 85 cutlass that has a 6.0 ls engine.i agreed to look things over and correct anything i found wrong like spliced wires and such.first thing i noticed is the starter relay only has 2 wires instead of 4.if i start from scratch and run all 4 wires,what do i do with the wires that are already on the starter?
12V from the battery to large post on the starter solenoid and 12V start/ignition wire to small post is all you need. Now I don't like having constant 12v going directly to the starter solenoid or having to crawl underneath the car to connect a remote start switch so I mounted a solenoid up on the firewall and ran from the battery to the new solenoid and ran the small starter wire to the new solenoid. I then ran a jumper wire on the starter from the battery post on the starter solenoid to the starter wire post on the starter solenoid and from the new solenoid I ran a new 12v battery cable to the large post on the starter solenoid so now power only goes to the starter once keyed to start. The starter relay is nothing more than a switch with one side having a constant 12v and the other side only gets 12v when keyed to start. By using your test light you can determine which side is constant and what is keyed power.

I'd figure out what the wires are before moving them or getting rid of them. None of us can say what is what on that car without looking at it, just can say what it's supposed to be.
Relay is easy, 4 pins. As mentioned it's a controlled switch, just handles high current.
30- In
87- Out
85- Coil ground
86- Coil 12v positive
The Coil energizes it and closes the circuit between 30 & 87 when you complete the circuit between 85 & 86.
Pretty simple.
