coolant hose sizing
I am just wrapping up a cayman s ls3 swap. i am very tight on space. i had to use an electric water pump for the conversion. instead of a one piece bridge that goes across to both sides of the block, the kit has two separate pieces for the water in/ water out. foe each side. i have y splitters to split the in and out water to each side. the main hose sizes are 1.5", my question is, can i get away with using two 3/4 inch hoses, one for each side? ( would actually be 4 hoses, 2 in and 2 out) ?
Flow volume is closely related to the area of the hose (not simply diameter). Area of a circle is Radius squared time Pi.
So the area of a 1.5" hose is .75 x .75 x 3.14 = 1.76 square inches.
The area of a .75 hose is .375 x.375 x 3.14 = 0.44 squared inches. Two hoses give you an area of 0.88 square inches, about half the area of one 1.5" hose.
Granted other factors could be limiting the water flow, but these small hoses could be the major constriction.
