Default Custom motor mounts=no clearnace issues?

can i make custom motor mounts in my 69 camaro and sit an ls1 in it without cutting the frame or oil pan? i am not interested in using an ac compressor. i have completely stock steering. will it lift the motor way too high? anyone done it? whats my best route to go, i am leaning on s&p mounts if i cant do custom ones...i have done a search

I haven't done this myself yet, but if you move the engine 1" further back than the S&P mounts do, you won't have to modify the oil pan or steering system. You can't use the factory heater box with the increased set back, through. With the S&P mounts, the engine sets about as low as you can go without hitting the crossmember or center link.

In my opinion (after having gone through it just recently) it may be possible. The main issue would be the motor mounts. I used my own, but they mount like S&P mounts, the problem with this is that the moter still needs to be moved back about 1/2"-1", which I believe there is room to move it, however, then you'll have to get tricky with the mount because now the one lower hole won't line up, but I don't think this is a problem if you use all 6 holes on the block and build the mount accordingly or move the frame mount with a plate. Keep in mind that I don't think any 2 1st gens are exactly alike and you'll have to see for yourself, for example I have a manual steering that I converted to power steering, so my ptiman arm is the shorter 5 3/8" arm instead of the 5 3/4" which moves the drag link closer to the front of the car, this will make a difference, also, my steering radius was shortend just a bit and this also makes a difference, the interference will come from the part of the drag link that angles up and toward the back of the car as you turn the steering wheel to full lock. You will also hit the heater core tubes (they will have to go). Also, watch the alternator, the plastic cover on the bottom may hit the frame, mine did and I had to put a 3/16" spacer between the mount and block, to move it up.

Also, keep in mind if you do this, the S&P headers will not fit, nor will the stock F-Body exhaust manifolds (even with grinding), at least not with a power steering box, I've heard but not verified that Z06 manifolds may fit.

But again, remember I don't think any 2 conversions will be alike, what may or
may not work for me, may be different for you or someone else.

Good luck, I think its worth a try,
Marc

crap, i have done minimal welding and less modification. however i am quite crafty. i still dont think this is something i want to undertake. and also, i MUST have a heater core. i think i am better off going with the regular s&p mounts. it will currently run manifolds, then go to headers eventually. i really dont want to custom build any either. it sounds like way more than i can handle right now...anyone else have any encouragement?
