Default Built my first set of headers today - '66 Chevy II/LS1 - PICS

I was very happy with how they came out. If you know anything about the 'Box' Chevy II's('66-'67), you know there isn't much room for headers(with the stock front end). I tried to fit some 1.75" shorty 351 Ford headers to the car, but they would only work if you didn't need spark plugs...

So, I made a set. I have custom Mac collectors coming in tomorrow for them - and will have them Tig welded, then ceramic coated. I'm thinking about having them made to sell to the public. They're 1.75" primaries, and will have a 2.5" collector. Should perform similarly to a Mac midlength on an F-body IMO. We'll see.

The lack of room, and squeezing in between the shock tower and starter - called for the noticable difference in how the #1 and #2 primaries were ran and look. The drivers side was much easier, but I still had to get around the stock steering 'box' and arm. I had pictures of them on the car, but they came out too dark.. I'll get more later of the finished product. BTW - they CAN be removed fairly easily too.

If I wasn't going to SEMA next week, we would have the car rolling by then. Oh well, sacrifices..

Very nice! Bet they'd fit my son's LS1 that we are putting into his 1970 GMC pickup. How much are you going to charge?

Not sure right now. I do have a header manufacturer that will make them for me, but haven't ironed out any pricing yet. I'll post first on here for sure - when I have a figure.

And by the way they're designed, they would probably fit on just about any kind of hybrid LS1. I'm going to do some testing with various motor mounts(clearancing), because that's where there may be some issues on other cars/trucks.

If that's the case and you can keep the price down, I think you'd sell a bunch of them. How about a 100% return guarantee if they don't fit in a particular hybrid? I know that a lot of people want headers but they don't know what will fit and don't want to have to deal with the hassle of trying to return a set if they don't it.

Lane keep us posted. A buddie of mine has a LS1 in a 67 Nova. He has the Heidts tubular k-member and control arms. Gives you a bunch of room. Car is painted, motor and tranny in, needs headers. We are going to see if a set of Macs, from a f-body, will fit, but I'm not too sure about that. When do you think these will be available?

very nice indeed, if you try a 1 size fits all, watch that #1 tube, it looks pretty tight for a 1st gen camaro. It may hit the stock control arm and/or the frame mount. But either way it looks good and I wish I had them skilz

Default LS1 Conversion Headers

Lane, very nice indeed. When you say mid-length are you going to attach the collector where you left the primaries in the pic? Any chance of making a full length set or just selling the portion you've done (w/o collector, not finish welded or coated) so full length headers could be made for other conversions? -Bob

Yes - but I believe a full length would work fine on most applications - and it would be easy to do from where I stopped on these. I think they would perform and look pretty killer too IMO! But not on a Chevy II... There's not a wide enough opening to take 4 1.75" tubes through - on the passenger side anyway...

I got the collectors on them now and they're perfect! I'll try to get pics of them up tonight or tomorrow.

There's a 1st Gen hybrid not too far from my shop. I'll go take a look at it and see what these may or may not interfere with.

How about making a set of tri-y's - would that afford enough room on a Nova? Don't mean to second guess what you've done - its great - just asking questions - you know as soon as you put something like this out there all kinds of questions/combinations come up. -Bob

Funny you mention that. We own a '65 Mustang with Tri-Y's on it and I almost made them that way. But I had a little more room than I thought and liked the way these were shaping up and rolled with it. A Tri-Y LT would be cool, but not even a straight 3" tube will fit between the bellhousing(4L60E) and the 'firewall brace' or whatever you call it on this '66 II. You could notch it and make room, but it's still VERY tight - even with the 2.5" collector these will have.

Looks good Lane, I'd be willing to sign up as a test subject for you. I got a '66 Nova with '01 LS1 and T-56. I was planning on doing headers this winter. I have a wayne due front clip with the C-4 front suspension. I would like to see what the interference would be with the new rack and pinion steering shaft I have. I was going to try full length but there is just not enough room after the firewall, I like your design. Did you use a kit to make those up? Thanks Justin
