Default 5.3 in a jeep.....

ok my brother is buying a 1989 jeep wrangler tomorrow and has plans to swap a 5.3 into it.

Here are our questions.

We know the 5.3 will fit but would we be able to use a 5 or 6 speed manual and still have a transfer case mate up to it?

thats the main question...want to be able to run a 5.3 with a manual and still have a functional 4 wheel drive

The 5.3 motor actually came with a 5-speed manual tranny from the factory in a 2wd and 4wd model. So all you would need is a matching engine and transmission. I wouldnt buy the factory transfer case though because they are incredibly expensive and you can just buy another adapter and mate up a beefier and less expensive transfer case. If your interested I have a 5.3/5speed wiring harness from a 2004 chevy pickup. Let me know.

The 4.8 came with a 5 speed behind it, not the 5.3. The motors are externally identical though. The transmission that came in the trucks is a NV3500 though, which isn't known for it's exceptional strenth. I think you would be better off with something like a nv4500 and a transfer case to match it. Is the front diff on the drivers side, or on the passenger side?

No 5-speed 5.3s. Only 4.8 or 6.0.

thanks for the info.

So I could get a 5.3 motor and the 5 speed that came with the 4.8...then just upgrade the transfer case and i am set?

I am assuming advanced adapters makes motor mounts and tranny mounts and such...well at least the ones i couldn;t make myself.

Advance Adapters rocks. I had a 1998 model TJ full Rock Crawler and they custom built me an adapter for my Clune V 4:1 low range box and helped out with setting everything up. 200:1 crawl ratio is crazy, damn I miss that thing.

sry bout that, yeah your pb right. I just went to the dealership to have them run the vin off of the harness tag and they said it popped up as a 5.3/ manual tranny for an 04 pickup. Yeah advanced adapters will have what your looking for I am sure.

I am in the middle of doing this swap in my CJ.

Here is what you need:

The stock harness modified as stand alone
the PCM flashed for stand alone, auto trans delete, and several un needed sensors disabled
you will need a heavy duty tranny such as a NV 4500, don't waste your time or money on anything else.

To run the tranny, you will need a conversion bel housing, flywheel and clutch ( I got mine from AA and have the part #)

I converted my dana 300 transfer case to a 4:1 with a HD 32 spline input so it would mate up to the NV 4500 ( parts from JB conversions)

I used a hydraulic clutch linkage from a FJ 40

Default Any update on your project CJHeap?

I'm starting out a Scrambler conversion, do you have any updates on how yours has progressed?
