Default Decisions...Decisions

My brother is thinking about putting an LS1 into his 92 SWB truck..... the truck is daily driven/raced .....should he put the camaro/vette 5.7 or should he go with the 6L truck version? I'd say he go with the 6 liter, because as i understand it there's not a whole lot of difference between the two, his truck is not as aerodynamic as the cars and the extra cubes would help that....btw is there an easy way to identify between the LQ4 and the LQ9??

If weight's not a concern you can probably come by a 6.0 for a lot less money.

Today he came across a 6.0 and tranny for 2500, at first i didnt realize that it would be so much less. I thought that it would have been alot of miles at that price, but it's pretty low miles. Same place has an LS1 just engine for 1500...it's a 98 or 99 with more miles...maybe he just found a "gold mine" of a place, considering the prices.

He's not really worried about the weight, the difference between the 6.0 and the Vortech 355 w/steel aftermarket heads its probly going to be minimal, he might actually lose a little weight.

where is this ls1 for so cheap? im looking for an ls1 to put in my first gen. i wanted one with a lot of miles anyways as i am going to be replacing rotating assebly anyways.

i have not looked around much, but is that a good price for the ls1? or is that the norm. seems to me like that is cheap.

I considered that to be a good price, considering what Ive seen them go for on Ebay....but then again, I also think that Ebay'ers think that it MUST be a good deal if it's on Ebay. Ive seen engines go for damn near what you could buy them for new. The LS1\6speed combo that's in my 97 came off of ebay, but it was a STEAL, i cant believe i was the only one that bid on it.

I think that a junkyard is a pretty good place to get one, usually the engine is in good shape (is not like a blown engine had anything to do with the vehicle getting totalled.) Most of the junkyards have a return policy (but make sure and ask about their return policy), so if you put it in and it is blown, you can take it back. The junkyard I was referring to is off of N.Shepard Dr. (if i remember right) in Houston. Give one of them a call, if they dont have one...have them "Run" it for you. Hope this helps. If ya want some more info PM me.

My brother rode in a 2500 w/6.0 saturday, he said that it was a little disappointing, but he also said that the truck seemed like it had been ragged on pretty hard, and wasnt in very good shape. The 2500 is also a pretty heavy truck, Im sure that the weight didnt help much either. He has a Built 355 TBI that needs a rebuild, but he said that his 355 would run circles around the 2500 that he was riding in. The 355 has a couple of Issues ... but my father rode in a few 4.8's and 5.3's that were in the used car section of Landmark Chevrolet....and the 355 pulled ALOT harder than they did. My brother doesnt want to take a step back if he were to go to a tuck engine...he wants the engine that goes in to at least pull as hard as the one that he's got now.
